What you need
- An iPhone with FaxBuddy and an internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
- The pages: paper to scan, a PDF, photos, or a few lines you type in the app.
- The recipient’s fax number. Not their phone number: a person answering can’t receive a fax.
- Credits: one per page. Your first page is free, once per iPhone, and cover pages are always free.
The person you’re faxing needs nothing new. They receive it on their fax machine or fax service like any other fax.
Step by step
- Tap New Fax. It’s at the bottom of the Home screen.
- Add your pages. Scan paper with the camera (several pages in a row), pick a PDF or image from Files, choose photos, or write a page in the app. You can mix them in one fax, reorder pages by dragging, and crop or rotate a scan.
- Sign, if the form asks for it. Draw your signature once, then drag and pinch it into place on a scanned page.
- Type the fax number. Or pick it from Contacts. If a fax number is printed on your pages (“Fax completed form to …”), FaxBuddy offers it with one tap; it never fills it in on its own.
- Add a cover page, if you like. A note and who it’s from. It’s never charged.
- Tap Send, or Send Later to pick a time. A scheduled fax goes from our servers at that time, even if your iPhone is off.
Following it until it arrives
The fax waits at the top of Home under In progress, with a timer showing how long it’s been sending. You can close the app. When the receiving machine confirms every page, the fax shows Delivered and you get a notification. Open the fax to share a receipt with the time it was delivered and the number of pages.
Faxing outside the US
Type the number starting with + and the country code, for example +49 for Germany or +81 for Japan. The flag beside the number shows which country it goes to. FaxBuddy faxes 17 countries, and a page costs one credit to all of them: the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Mexico.
Premium-rate, shared-cost and personal numbers can’t be faxed, and neither can mobile numbers in Estonia, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium. FaxBuddy tells you before you send.
If it doesn’t go through
The fax says why in plain words: the line was busy, nobody answered, a person or voicemail picked up instead of a fax machine, or the number couldn’t be reached. The credits come back to you automatically. Tap Retry Fax to send the same pages again, or Edit Number to fix the number first.

How long does it take to send a fax from an iPhone?
Adding the pages and the number takes a minute or two. A few pages usually go through in a minute or two; long faxes can take several minutes. You can leave the app while it sends.
Can I send a fax from my iPhone for free?
Your first page is free, once per iPhone, and cover pages are always free. After that each page costs one credit, from $0.40 a page in the 100-page pack. There’s no subscription.
Does the recipient need the app?
No. They receive a normal fax on their fax machine or fax service.
Can I fax the same pages to several numbers?
