Is there a free fax app for iPhone?

Search for a free fax app and you’ll find plenty that say “free”. Most mean free to download, or a free trial that turns into a subscription. Here’s what you actually get for free, and what comes after.

Why truly free faxing is rare

Every fax is a phone call: someone pays the phone network for each page. An app that promises unlimited free faxes is usually paying for it with a subscription you agree to on the way, often as a trial. That’s why “free” in a fax app almost always has a limit or a renewal date.

How to fax for free, or close to it

  • One page: FaxBuddy’s first page is free. A one-page form costs nothing.
  • Up to 10 pages, once: Fax.Plus’s free plan includes 10 pages in total.
  • Anything after: pay per page rather than per week. In FaxBuddy, 10 pages cost $5.99 once, and the pages you don’t use never expire.

Watch out for

  • Trials that ask for payment first. If the App Store sheet says the trial becomes a subscription, put a reminder in your calendar to cancel it in Settings → your name → Subscriptions at least 24 hours before it ends. How to cancel.
  • Weekly plans. $6.99 to $9.99 a week adds up to $360 to $520 a year if forgotten.
  • Failed faxes. Check whether a fax that doesn’t arrive still costs you. In FaxBuddy it doesn’t. Which apps refund a failed fax.

Questions

Is FaxBuddy free?

Free to download, and your first page is free, without buying anything. After that you pay per page, from $0.40, with no subscription.

Can I fax for free from my iPhone?

A page or a few, yes: FaxBuddy’s first page is free, and Fax.Plus’s free plan has 10 pages in total. Unlimited free faxing doesn’t really exist, because every page is a phone call someone pays for.

Why does a free fax app ask me to subscribe?

Most “free” fax apps are free to download but need a subscription or a trial that turns into one before you can send. Read the App Store sheet before you confirm.
