Writing a German fax number
Inside Germany, numbers start with a 0, like 030 for Berlin. From abroad, replace that 0 with +49:
| Written in Germany | Type in FaxBuddy |
|---|---|
| 030 12345678 (Berlin) | +49 30 12345678 |
| 089 1234567 (Munich) | +49 89 1234567 |
| 040 1234567 (Hamburg) | +49 40 1234567 |
| +49 (0)69 1234567 (Frankfurt) | +49 69 1234567 |
The “(0)” some letterheads show is left out when you dial from abroad. You don’t need 011 or 00 either: the + does that. As soon as you type +49, the flag beside the number turns German. Or tap the flag, choose Germany, and type the number as written, with its 0.
Step by step
- Tap New Fax and add your pages: scan them, or pick a PDF or photos.
- Type the number starting with +49, without the area code’s first 0.
- Add a cover page if the office expects one. You can write the note in German; it’s free.
- Tap Send, or Send Later to have it arrive in German office hours.
Numbers you can’t fax
- 0900 premium-rate, 0180 service and 0700 personal numbers: FaxBuddy refuses them before you send, because calls to them cost far more than a page.
- Mobile numbers (015, 016, 017): FaxBuddy warns you, because mobiles almost never receive faxes. Look for the number marked “Fax” on the letterhead instead.
The time difference
Germany is usually 6 hours ahead of New York and 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles. Fax machines answer around the clock, but a fax that lands at 3 a.m. waits on a pile. Schedule it with Send Later and FaxBuddy sends it from our servers at that time, even if your iPhone is off.
What it costs
The same as any fax in FaxBuddy: one credit per page, from $0.40 a page in the 100-page pack (in Germany, from 0,45 €). Your first page is free, cover pages are free, and if the fax isn’t delivered, the credits come back. See all prices.
Questions
Do I need to dial 011 to fax Germany from the US?
No. Type +49 and the number without its leading 0. The + replaces 011.
Is faxing Germany more expensive than faxing in the US?
No. FaxBuddy charges one credit per page to every country it faxes.
Can I fax a German public office, Finanzamt or health insurer?
Yes, if they give a fax number. They receive an ordinary fax, the same as from a machine.
What if the line is busy?
The fax shows Busy, the credits come back, and you can tap Retry Fax a little later.
