How to fax Japan from your iPhone

Many Japanese companies, clinics and local offices still work by fax. You can fax them from your iPhone, wherever you are, for the same price as a fax at home.

Writing a Japanese fax number

Inside Japan, numbers start with a 0, like 03 for Tokyo. From abroad, replace that 0 with +81:

Written in JapanType in FaxBuddy
03-1234-5678 (Tokyo)+81 3 1234 5678
06-1234-5678 (Osaka)+81 6 1234 5678
052-123-4567 (Nagoya)+81 52 123 4567
FAX 092-123-4567 (Fukuoka)+81 92 123 4567

Japanese business cards and letterheads list the fax number next to “FAX”; the one next to “TEL” is the phone. You don’t need 011 or 010: the + does that. Once you type +81, the flag beside the number turns Japanese. Or tap the flag, choose Japan, and type the number as written, with its 0.

Step by step

  1. Tap New Fax and add your pages: scan them, or pick a PDF or photos.
  2. Type the number starting with +81, without the first 0.
  3. Add a free cover page if you like. You can write the note in Japanese: FaxBuddy draws it on your iPhone, so Japanese characters come out right.
  4. Tap Send, or Send Later to have it arrive in Japanese office hours.

Numbers you can’t fax

  • 0570 (Navi Dial) and 0990 premium-rate numbers: FaxBuddy refuses them before you send.
  • Mobile numbers (070, 080, 090): FaxBuddy warns you, because mobiles almost never receive faxes.

The time difference

Japan is 13 hours ahead of New York in summer and 14 in winter, and 16 or 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles; Japan has no daylight saving time. A fax you send in the American afternoon lands in the middle of the Japanese night. Schedule it with Send Later and FaxBuddy sends it from our servers at that time, even if your iPhone is off.

What it costs

The same as any fax in FaxBuddy: one credit per page, from $0.40 a page in the 100-page pack (in Japan, from 60円 a page). Your first page is free, cover pages are free, and if the fax isn’t delivered, the credits come back. See all prices.
