How to fax a PDF from your iPhone

A form came by email, or you downloaded it from a website, and it has to go back by fax. You don’t need to print it. Here’s how to fax the PDF straight from your iPhone.

Two ways to get the PDF in

From Mail, Safari or Files: the Share button

  1. Open the PDF: tap the attachment in Mail, the download in Safari, or the file in Files.
  2. Tap Share and choose FaxBuddy.
  3. FaxBuddy opens a new fax with the PDF’s pages in it. Type the fax number and tap Send.

From inside FaxBuddy

  1. Tap New Fax, then choose to add a file.
  2. Pick the PDF from Files: iCloud Drive, Downloads, On My iPhone, or a connected service such as Dropbox.
  3. Type the number and tap Send.

Sending only some of the pages

Every page costs one credit, so a 30-page PDF where only 3 pages matter adds up. When a file brings in more than 10 pages, FaxBuddy asks straight away whether to send them all or Choose Pages, so you only pay for the pages you send.

Adding pages to the PDF

One fax can mix a PDF with scanned paper, photos and a page you type, in any order. A common case: the PDF form, plus a scan of your ID or an insurance card. Add a free cover page with a note if the office asks for one.

A PDF that has to be signed

FaxBuddy can’t sign on a PDF’s pages yet. Signing works on scanned pages: print the form or fill it in another app, scan it, then draw your signature and drag it into place. Or sign it in the Markup tool in Files and share the signed PDF to FaxBuddy.

Limits

  • Up to 50 pages and 20 MB per fax.
  • Password-protected PDFs can’t be sent. Remove the password first; FaxBuddy tells you when a PDF has one.
  • PDFs and images only. Word documents aren’t supported; save them as PDF first (Word and Pages can both export to PDF).

Finding the fax number in the PDF

Forms often say where to send them (“Fax completed form to …”). FaxBuddy reads the text on your pages on your iPhone itself and offers a fax number it finds, labelled as a fax number, with one tap. It never fills it in on its own, and phone numbers are never offered as fax numbers.

Questions

Can I fax a PDF from an email on my iPhone?

Yes. Tap the PDF attachment in Mail, tap Share and choose FaxBuddy. Type the fax number and send.

How much does it cost to fax a PDF?

One credit per page you send, from $0.40 a page in the 100-page pack. Your first page is free, once per iPhone, and cover pages are free.

Does the fax look the same as the PDF?

Fax is black and white and lower resolution than a screen, as with any fax machine. Text and forms come through clearly; photos and colour shading come out as greys.

Why can’t I send my PDF?

It may be password-protected, over 50 pages, or larger than 20 MB. FaxBuddy says which one when you add it.
